VAT Relief

You may be eligible for VAT Relief when you purchase some of the products in our range, even if you don't have arthritis or another condition yourself.

HMRC set out the rules, which we have done our best to outline below, however if you are unsure please do contact HMRC.

VAT Relief

VAT relief for people living with a condition such as arthritis is not dependent on the benefits a disabled person may or may not get and a person does not have to be registered disabled in order to qualify.

An easy guide to VAT Relief

Simply put, if you or the person you are buying for has arthritis, you will not be charged VAT on products designed specifically to make living with arthritis easier so long as those products are for personal use.

There are two parts to the criteria as set out by the UK government which defines firstly which products are eligible and then who is eligible. Both the criteria's must be fulfilled in order to claim VAT relief.

1 - WHICH ITEMS ARE ELIGIBLE?

VAT exemption only applies to certain items; these are items that have been designed to be used by someone who has a chronic condition, including daily living aids and care equipment. We have highlighted all eligible products on our website that qualify for VAT exemption in the VAT Relief Collection.

2 - WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR VAT RELIEF?

To be eligible for VAT relief the government says you have to fit the following criteria:

  • A person with a physical or mental impairment which has a long-term and substantial adverse effect upon his/her ability to carry out everyday activities; with a condition which the medical profession treats as a chronic condition, such as rheumatoid or severe osteo-arthritis; or
  • A person with a terminal illness; or
  • Charities.

HOW DO I DECLARE ELIGIBILITY?

In order to waive VAT on an eligible purchase, the government requires a simple declaration to be made as to the nature of your disability at the time of ordering. You do not need to show any proof of your disability to any party at any time.

Charities simply need to provide their charity number.

Important Note: It does not include any person who is only temporarily disabled or incapacitated, such as with a broken limb.
